Ordering a wrought iron door that doesn't fit is the most expensive mistake in this purchase. Measuring correctly takes 10 minutes with a tape measure. Here is exactly what our factory needs from you.
Remove any trim. Measure the distance between the wall studs at top, middle and bottom of the opening. Provide all three numbers; walls are rarely square. The smallest width is your rough opening width.
Measure from the floor (not the finished threshold) to the underside of the header at both left and right sides. Report the smaller number.
The depth of the wall, from exterior wall face to interior wall face. Standard is 4½"–9¼". Jamb depth determines the frame profile we build.
Stand outside facing the door. If hinges are on the left and the door opens inward, it is a left-hand inswing. Photograph the current door from outside — this photo alone prevents 90% of swing errors.
Send 3 photos: straight-on view of the opening, a close-up of the jamb/sill condition, and the surrounding wall. Our engineers confirm every order against your photos before production starts.
| Mistake | Result |
|---|---|
| Measuring the old door leaf instead of the opening | Frame arrives too large — opening must be cut |
| Ignoring an out-of-square opening | Gaps at the top or side; weather sealing fails |
| Assuming both sides of a double opening are equal | Uneven reveal; door panels misaligned |
Send your measurements through our wrought iron doors page and we'll return a CAD drawing of your door for approval before any production begins. For curved-top and arched designs, see our hand-forged curved-top entry door as an example of what custom sizing can achieve.
